The MESS International Theatre Festival was looking for a new website to replace their ageing, old, and frankly boring template websites.
During research it became evident that the client was willing to go bold and use the amazing photography that they had access to of the plays performed during the festival. I decided to put it front and center and designing the user interface around it.
Over 50 photographs were used as backgrounds of the website, each carefully chosen to best live within the space available to screens, and to allow the UI to tastefully wrap them.
The play listing also leveraged thumbnails of the shows and was intentionally not showing play titles initially, but only on hover to encourage visitors to explore by eye, not by name.
